A renowned and important map of Kyle, one of the three districts in the sheriffdom of Ayr, including Ayr itself. Finely engraved, the map is decorated with cartouches for the title and a scale, and a large armorial with perfectly gilded crown for the dedication. The map was drawn by Timothy Pont (c.1564-c.1614), who spent a number of years surveying Scotland in great detail at his own expense. In June 1654 Blaeu received a 14-year licence for publication of the atlas from Oliver Cromwell, and, drawing mainly on Pont's work, produced the first atlas of Scotland with large-scale maps of all areas. The atlas first appeared in 1654 and this example, with Spanish text to the verso, was issued in 1662 in the "Atlas Maior" series. On good quality thick paper, with a pair of small wormholes in the printed border, otherwise a fine example.
