Santini's Italian published edition of Giles Didier Robert De Vaugondy's map of Japan first appeared in 1778 in the "Atlas Universel". In 1784 Santini sold the plates to Remondini, whose name appears on this particular example - indicating that this is the second state of the map. Japan is shown with original outline colour dividing the seven regions and with further subdivisions to show the sixty-six kingdoms. The central title cartouche is surrounded by an intricate engraving with flora, fauna and two views of Japanese cities with mountains beyond. An attractive, finely-engraved item.
