A New Map Of The Terraqueous Globe According To The Latest Discoveries : E. Wells

An attractive example of an increasingly scarce and distinctive map. Engraved by Michael Burghers, engraver to the University of Oxford, the map appeared in Edward Wells atlas"A New SEtt of Maps both of Ancient and Present Geography ..." dedicated, as many of the maps are, to the eleven year old William Duke of Gloucester, student at Christchurch Oxford, under Wells. The plate is illustrated with views of Oxford beneath the spheres with figures from the New World, tutors and students with navigational and surveying instruments. The cartography is basic with strong outlines defining coastlines and little nomenclature. Nevertheless the map illustrates the accepted cartography of the period with an up-to-date Australian outline, California as an island and the Antarctic described "Parts As Yet Undiscovered". An interesting ans striking double hemisphere world.
