Following the expanding urbanisation of many British towns during the nineteenth century and the needs of an increasingly mobile population, single-sheet or folding maps simply became impractical if they were to show the scale required. The Ordnance Survey produced detailed large-scale surveys of town and country, from about 1820 on, and the requirement for independent commercial surveys disappeared. One of the major independent cartographic publishers of the time was the firm of G. W. Bacon who, from around 1860 to 1920, produced large-scale maps and atlases based on the OS of many large British towns. This map, from the "Atlas Of London", illustrates clearly the absorption of London's once-outlying villages into the suburban development we recognise today. This map, sheet 42, shows the area from Hammersmith in the south to Harlesden Green.
