Folio. Frontispiece chart, Tp, ff.[i] dedication, ff.[i] preface, ff.[i] contents, 45 double-page lithograph maps with original (some machine) colour, pp.1-100 index. Partial contents North Polar chart -- The World, in hemispheres -- Chart of the World, on Mercator's projection -- Europe -- Asia -- Oceania -- Australia -- New Zealand -- Africa -- North America -- West India Islands and Central America -- South America -- Alphabetical index. Quarter calf with buckram boards and a gilt embossed title including the Prince of Wales' feathers. Raised bands to the spine; all edges gilded. Boards worn - paste-down endpapers include the heraldic copperplate bookplate of Anne Turner . A detailed world atlas dedicated to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Alexander Keith Johnston I (1804-1871) was a Geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society from 1842. He was the younger brother of Sir William Johnston, founder of the family firm, and joined the firm in 1826 having been apprenticed to J.Kirkwood and Sons. He produced many maps in his own name, most of which were engraved and published by the family firm. He titled himself Geographer at Edinburgh in Ordinary to the Queen. This work includes Alexander Keith's maps, published here in ' a new edition' by Blackwood and Sons; he was also appointed as Her Majesty's Geography for Scotland in 1897. Internally fresh, binding a little worn but sound.
