Folio. Rebound half blue calf and marbled boards. Tp, Preface and contents, routes and distance tables, 38 singlepage and 3 folding maps. "Pigot & Co's British Atlas of the Counties of England, with a map of England and Wales and a circular one of the country round London ... vignettes of the cathedrals and ... general statisticks of each county... distance tables ... and mail and coach routes". An attractive and finely presented atlas of the English counties, each map having a well engraved vignette of a major building within the county and a page of descriptive detail. The large folding maps are of England and Wales, Yorkshire and a circular, Environs of London. These and the county maps are all finely engraved, very detailed and augmented with a page of text describing the history, physical characteristics, industry and agriculture, population and major towns of each county. Engraved on steelplates by the Pigot family, engravers and publishers, these are actually significant as the first county maps to be thus produced. First published as monthly part-works, these provide a fascinating overview of England at end of the Georgian period. Folding maps with a little light offset and backed along old folds but overall a very good example.
