This attractive and fascinating map of Egypt and Nile delta is embellished by the figure of Egypt in the left foreground; her protecting gods surround her. A minotaur sits to the right and coins decorate the top of the map. The vignettes depicting various gods occupy as much space as the actual map, making this a highly decorative work of art - an Egyptologist's cornucopia. Luyken was born and died in Amsterdam, and is better known for engraving the 104 engravings in the Martyrs' Mirror. Jan Goeree, Dutch designer, artist and poet, was responsible for publishing this map. A good impression of this scarce map, laid on archivist's tissue for preservation.
