Thomas Malton "the younger", was an English painter of topographical and architectural views, and an engraver, who taught perspective to, among other pupils, J. M. W. Turner. In 1773 he had sent the Royal Academy a view of Covent Garden, and was afterwards a constant exhibitor, chiefly of views of London streets and buildings, drawn in Indian ink and tinted. His extreme accuracy in architectural details renders his work of great value as topographical records; they are typically enlivened with groups of figures in fashionable costume. The stonework and lamps are highly detailed and subtly shaded, with high contrast and sepia wash. Here he is assisted by J. Gandon, architect.
