From The Illustrated London News, dated March 15, 1873. Turkestan, also spelled Turkistan, literally means "Land of the Turks" in Persian and referred, here, to that area in Central Asia between Siberia to the north and Tibet, India and Afghanistan to the south, the Caspian Sea to the west and Mongolia and the Gobi Desert to the east. With Russian and British boundaries clearly identified this topical map illustrates the theatre of the "Great Game" conflict.
