A New And Correct Map Of The World : J. Bowles

A rare separately issued wall-map showing the double hemisphere world map surrounded by diagrams and panels of text describing innumerable aspects of the physical world and its heavens set against a a darkly shaded background. John Bowles' two-sheet map is typical of a genre produced in London during the eighteenth century as British mapmaking caught up with, and overtook, mainland European cartography. Although the cartography is somewhat out-dated by the the time of publication the presentation and immense amount of detail made for dramatic and educational wall-hangings for home or library. This map was first published in 1744 and shows a prominent California Island but reasonable outlines for the eastern North America coasts, Africa, Asia and Europe. Re-published about 1768, lacking the engraved date of the original, the map appeared as James Cook was about to embark on the series of voyages which were to confirm anew the outlines of much of the Pacific coastlines. Only examples of the first state of the map have actually been recorded and the only difference we can see is in the removal of the date - MDCCXLIV - in the lower publisher cartouche which includes the advertisement for some of Bowles other cartographic publications, including Herman Moll's atlases. A very attractive map, this example has large blank margins and a few, expertly repaired and negligible tears.
