The monastery had been founded in 1149 near Bindon Hill near Lulworth Cove, as a daughter house of Forde Abbey, but the terrain proved too demanding to sustain the community. It was bought in 1641 by the Weld family, the current landowners, who built Lulworth Castle. A fascinating and detailed historical note beneath the view explains that this was a Cistercian abbey around 1172. This print was published in 'Antiquities, or venerable remains of above four hundred castles, monasteries, palaces etc. in England and Wales', published in London between 1726 and 1752.
