This rare map is one of series of twelve county maps by William Smith the antiquarian and herald, and which were engraved in the Netherlands for Hans Woutneel's proposed atlas. Woutneel was a Dutch publisher then resident in London and, pursuing the Dutch interest in cartography probably intending an English county atlas to provide an updated competitor to Saxton's work. Taking information from William Smith, who was here using Norden's map, itself an improvement on Saxton's of Hertfordshire, this map shows the county in good detail with parks, rivers, historical sites and roads marked. However the atlas project never reached fruition and only 12 maps were engraved. These copperplates nevertheless remained in the London trade and were reissued over a long period. This example, with the imprints of John Overton and Peter Stent was published in an Overton atlas, comprising a mixture of Smith's maps with John Speed's and others about 1713. With light age discolouration, this is nevertheless an attractive and good example of a rare and interesting map - a fascinating record of late-Elizabethan Hertfordshire.
