Oriented with north to the left of the page Ortelius' map of Holland, like that of Zeeland, uses Jacob van Deventer's province map of Zeeland, first published in 1547, as its source. The map was published in editions of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" from 1570. The atlas achieved instant fame as "the world's first regularly produced atlas" (Skelton), being the first atlas with maps prepared to a uniform format. It was also an immediate commercial success, being reprinted four times in 1570, the first year of its publication. The atlas was frequently reprinted thereafter, with many of the maps re-engraved and up-dated, and new maps were added so that later editions contained up to 163 map sheets. The maps themselves are finely engraved, often very decorative and are generally found with text (here Latin) on the reverse. Van Den Broecke notes in "Ortelius Atlas Maps" that, "Ortelius marvels in the text on this map that such a small country produces such prodigious amounts of milk and of cheese which is known all over Europe"!
