Orbis Descriptio : G. Ruscelli

This is a fine, attractive map which appeared in Ruscelli's re-engraving and republication of Ptolemy's "Geographia". It is significant as the first double hemisphere world map to appear in an atlas. When first published in 1561, the map had no Great Southern Hemisphere, however for this later edition publisher Rosaccio added this vast mythical landmass which occupies most of the southern hemisphere. Asia and North America are shown linked while eastern Canada appears surrounded by waterways. A good example of an important map. A few negligible repaired tiny wormholes to top margin and centrefold.
