This attractive and interesting map appeared in some editions of Introductionis in Universam Geographiam by Philippus Cluverius, (1580 –1622), a German antiquary, geographer and historian. He was in charge of Leiden University's library, but his life's project was a study of classical geography, based not only on classical literary sources, but supplemented by wide travels and local inspections; he was one of the founders of historical geography. He is famed for his edition of Ptolemy's Geographia and the many issues of his works, published post-humously often re-using copperplates engraved for Jansson some years earlier. This map shows a double hemisphere world with figures decorating each corner; California is shown as an islandand the South Pacific includes post-Tasman cartography.
