This attractive and interesting map appeared in some editions of Introductionis in Universam Geographiam by Philippus Cluverius, (1580 –1622), a German antiquary, geographer and historian. He was in charge of Leiden University's library, but his life's project was a study of classical geography, based not only on classical literary sources, but supplemented by wide travels and local inspections; he was one of the founders of historical geography. He is famed for his edition of Ptolemy's Geographia and the many issues of his works, published post-humously often re-using copperplates engraved for Jansson some years earlier. This map details all Asia from 'Nova Zemla' in the north down to the northern tip of 'Nova Hollandia' (Australia) and 'Nova Guinea' in the south. A finely engraved cartouche shows a trader with elephant and camel.
