A finely engraved and uncommon map of Bermuda. This rare map appeared in the English edition of what began as the "Atlas Minor" series of publications - reduced versions of Mercator's maps re-engraved and issued from 1607 by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam. In the 1620's the copperplates came into the hands of London printers Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwright who published an English version of the atlas as "Historia Mundi; or Mercator's Atlas" adding a number of new maps only to be found in the three, 1635/37/39, editions. Some maps are signed but, for those unsigned, it is uncertain as to who were the actual engravers of some of these plates. Most maps are printed at right angles to the text page so there is a title both on the map but also running vertically along the side of the map, sometimes, typically, overlapping the map plate. This detailed map is displayed in an unusual format, set in the ocean but with the adjacent North American coasts included and out of scale.
