Terra Firma Et Novum Regnum Granatense ... : M. Sparke

A finely engraved and uncommon map of the north west part of South America, present-day Columbia and extending into the central America isthmus through panama to Costa Rica. This rare map appeared in the English edition of what began as the "Atlas Minor" series of publications - reduced versions of Mercator's maps re-engraved and issued from 1607 by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam. In the 1620's the copperplates came into the hands of London printers Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwright who published an English version of the atlas as "Historia Mundi; or Mercator's Atlas" adding a number of new maps only to be found in the three, 1635/37/39, editions. Some maps are signed but, for those unsigned, it is uncertain as to who were the actual engravers of some of these plates. Most maps are printed at right angles to the text page so there is a title both on the map but also running vertically along the side of the map, sometimes, typically, overlapping the map plate. This detailed map is one of the earliest of the area to be found.
