Map Of The County Of Devon : C. & J. Greenwood

A detailed map of Devon with a fine vignette of the north west view of Exeter Cathedral, built in Decorated Gothic style; arguably the most beautiful cathedral in Britain. The 300ft unbroken stretch of tierceron rib vaulting, the oldest existing set of misericords in the country, an image screen of 14th century sculpture, a vast and exquisitely carved early-14th century bishop's throne, a late-15th century astronomical clock, 400 medieval bosses ... the list goes on and on. Christopher and John Greenwood were one of the last private firms to undertake the large-scale mapping of England and Wales, producing many fine multi-sheet county maps from their own survey work as well as these attractive atlas maps. The atlas maps are most frequently found in attractive, full-wash colour across the body of the map, and are distinguished by their precise detail, finely scrolled lettering and vignette views of notable buildings within each county. Published in Christopher and John Greenwood's Atlas Of The Counties Of England, from Actual Surveys made from the Years 1817 to 1833, this particular example comes from the edition issued without a centre fold.
