A detailed map of Suffolk with a fine vignette view of the West Front of the Abbey Gate, Bury St. Edmunds, a large medieval gatehouse to one of the richest Benedictine monasteries in England, until the Dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. Christopher and John Greenwood were one of the last private firms to undertake the large-scale mapping of England and Wales, producing many fine multi-sheet county maps from their own survey work as well as these attractive atlas maps. The atlas maps are most frequently found in attractive, full-wash colour across the body of the map, and are distinguished by their precise detail, finely scrolled lettering and vignette views of notable buildings within each county. Published in Christopher and John Greenwood's Atlas Of The Counties Of England, from Actual Surveys made from the Years 1817 to 1833, this particular example comes from the edition issued without a centre fold.
