With attractive hand-colour, this is a very desirable example of one of the most celebrated world maps in Dutch cartography. From around 1630 Jan Jansson and Henricus Hondius set about up-dating the maps in the "Atlas" sequence, commenced in the previous century by Gerhard Mercator and continued by Jodocus Hondius. Mercator's world map of 1587, with its formal strapwork surround, was replaced by an elaborately decorated baroque-style engraving notable for the oval portraits of Caesar, Ptolemy, Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. The map was also notable for its representations of the four elements, swags of fruit, vignettes and various scenes. The map is one of the first Dutch atlas publications to copy Speed and show California as an island, but, correctly, is also the first atlas world map to indicate the Dutch discoveries on the Australian mainland in the Gulf of Carpentaria. This example is from a Latin text edition. Reinforcement to centrefold and marginal wear but overall a good and very decorative example. Sold by Francis Edwards in 1972 for £150 and from the collection of Rodney Shirley, one of the leading cartographic historians of recent times.
