Insularum Moluccarum Nova Descriptio : J. Jansson

An important and attractive map of the Spice Islands with large central title cartouche and two compass roses to the top of the map. The seas surrounding the islands of Bachian, Machian, Timor, Tidoro and Ternate feature local ships, a more extravagant European ship as well as sea monsters while a Moluccan couple stand in the lower right hand corner. Jodocus Hondius continued publication of Gerhard Mercator's "Atlas" project from 1606 when he engraved new, and republished earlier, maps by the great cartographer. The series formed the basis for one of the major atlas projects of the century with maps republished by Jan Jansson and other Dutch publishers over 50 years later. This map, engraved for Jansson is from one of the earliest French text editions and is a good strongly printed impression.
