A detailed and very rare map of the Fiji Islands, set within an elaborate illustrated border, presented "To Collectors Of Juvenile Christmas Offerings 1853". The Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society was particularly active throughout Australia, the Orient and amongst the Pacific islands and the presentation of such interesting and amusing publications was an appropriate and stimulating "newsletter" for their supporters at home. The lithographer, Anthony La Riviere, had his studio at 18 Clifton Street, Finsbury, north London, near where the Missionary Society was based. The detailed map of the islands is surrounded by beautifully produced vignettes of such scenes as 'hot springs', 'Wesleyan Mission house and heathen temple', 'departure of the "John Wesley" from Southampton' and 'a double canoe'. The scenes are enclosed in a delightfully rendered foliate border. Minor paper staining and the map is laid down, with repaired tear, for conservation.
