recent arrival
A remarkable survival, this large pen/ink manuscript map of Frome Selwood in Somerset is fascinating in several ways. The map concentrates on the area south of Frome including Blatch Bridge and Mount Pleasant, being largely a detailed composite of parcels of land, with a scale of approximately twenty inches to one mile. The map describes the estate "'belonging to Mrs. S. Haynes, by Joseph Singer, Land Surveyor, 1779". We have been able to trace a Joseph Singer, of Little Keyford, who owned and rented out many cottages in the area to labourers, but have found no record of a Mrs. S. Haynes. The plan, gives detail of various parcels of land with the names of numerous landowners, the most listed being Lord Weymouth and Sir Thomas Champney, but also including Joseph? Singer presumably a relative of the cartographer himself. A large key at lower left indicates the map's detail including ... houses, gardens, orchards, ponds, gates and stiles, roads, fences, arable and pasture land, rivers, rivulets, footpaths and quarries. Joseph Singer is recorded in Eden (Dictionary of Land Surveyors and Local Mapmakers, 1997), as also working for John Cary, the renowned London-based mapmaker and publisher, and producing maps of parts of South Wales. Unusually, the attractive manuscript cartouche is embellished with a detailed engraved vignette showing a rural scene. The map is backed onto coarse cotton with slightly worn edges, some rubbing of surface not affecting the detail, and is overall in good condition for a working plan.
