Captain James Cook's mapping of New Zealand created the first complete chart of the two island's coastlines. Cook's three voyages, begun in 1768 and terminating with his death in 1779, proved one of the great feats of navigating exploration and hydrography of any period. This combined chart of the River Thames, Mercury and Tolaga Bays and the Bay Of Islands was made during the first voyage, from 1768-71. A good example of the first issue of this chart, with minor evidence of old folds. This map was published in 1773 in John Hawkesworth's "Account Of The Voyages ... In The Southern Hemisphere", the first official account of Cook's monumental first voyage.
