Angliae, Scotiae Et Hiberniae, Sive Britannicar Insularum Descriptio : A. Ortelius

Ortelius' map of the British Isles is instantly recognisable with north to the right of the page and is based on Mercator's map of just a few years earlier. The map appeared in the first edition (1570) of Ortelius' great atlas, the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", and remained in use for many years. The atlas achieved instant fame as "the world's first regularly produced atlas" (Skelton), being the first atlas with maps prepared to a uniform format. It was also an immediate commercial success, being reprinted four times in the first year of its publication. The atlas was frequently reprinted, with many of the maps re-engraved and up-dated, and new maps added so that later editions contained up to 163 map sheets. The maps themselves are finely engraved and are often very decorative - the British Isles map being a fine example of these attributes. Minor marginal and centrefold reinforcement but an attractive example of a Latin text edition.
