Cocos Eylandt Isle De Cocos : W.C. Schouten

Two finely engraved and very rare plates from the accounts of one of the early Dutch voyages of discovery 1615-17. One plate (150 x 220mms) shows one of the two ships, under the command of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelis Schouten, approaching Cocos island, now part of the Tonga Island group. The second (135 x 220mms) shows Dutch sailors firing at a raft manned by Cocos islanders. The journal account of the voyage appeared in a number of European language editions with, seemingly, a number of almost similar but slightly different engravings of the same scenes. We have not been able to verify the source of this pair but can state they are the finest engraved of the group so far examined. The plates have been trimmed and mounted onto old, perhaps seventeenth century, laid paper in an early scrap-book and were acquired from the stock of legendary New York antiquarian bookseller H.P.Kraus.
