A charming miniature map of Cyprus. The map was published in London in "The British Colonial Pocket Atlas. A Complete Series Of Maps Illustrating The Geography Of The British Empire" using John Bartholomew's maps. Published at the height of Empire these maps were intended to bring the geographical breadth of Empire, thus emphasising the power and status of Britain, to the reader at home. The introduction explains of these countries "... there is so much scope for their trade and enterprise. It would therefore seem only necessary that these countries should be known to the British people in order that they may be occupied, and their wealth developed and utilised for the people's good" - an attitude rather out-of-keeping with current political correctness. A detailed and attractive little map.
