A New Map From The Mouth River Thames To The Severn : J. B. Wells

A very rare attractive and unusual map map extending from the Severn Estuary to the North Seashowing "a Great Space of Country on each side, the River Thames, with the Mail and other Stage Coach Roads .... The course of all Rivers and the different Navigable Canals ....". The map is very detailed, and extends north and south of the river so including Gloucester, Bristol and Salisbury to the west, Oxford to Winchester and Harwich to Hythe. A large decorative title piece shows the river spewing forth from its source. Apparently only one other example, at the British Library is recorded, and the map's engraver is not recorded. Carefully executed within an engraved etched and shaded frame, the map is similar to the engravings to be found in Boydell's book of Thames views of a couple of years earlier - perhaps this was intended to replace the rather plain original in a never printed new edition? Our map has some staining to the upper edge, fortunately not too prominent within the printed area and minor repairs to paper weakness, otherwise however very acceptable.
