A detailed and interesting nineteenth century map of Australia published in a late edition of the atlas of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. The Society was one of many Christian charities formed to aid the education of the British lower classes and its atlas of world maps proved one of the most successful and long-lived publications of the time being issued from around 1834 to 1880. The Society was founded by John, Earl Russell, and Henry Brougham, later Lord Chancellor of England in 1827. The Society's main purpose was to encourage universal literacy, by publishing books of good quality that would be affordable to the poor. Perhaps the grandest of their publications was their atlas, originally entitled "Maps Of The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge". It was first issued by Baldwin and Craddock, and then re-issued by other publishers, here Thomas Letts. This is a new map, replacing a single-sheet less detailed map, which shows a current summary of the discoveries made in the interior where explorers' tracks are identified with notations regarding their progress and the nature of the interior. This informative map has extensive numbered lists identifying each State's counties, an inset map of Tasmania at top right and of the whole world at top left showing distances from Australian ports to major locations around the world. A good fresh example with negligible library blind-stamp at each lower corner.
