A fine example of one of Ortelius' most important atlas maps from the rare English text edition. The map is one of the first to show Southeast Asia in relatively good detail and extends from India, across the Pacific to the United States west coast and includes, at the lower border "Beach" - a name applied to Australia, derived from reports of Marco Polo. The size of the area covered, related to the amount of detail shown, however, makes for some strange incompatabilities of scale. Japan appears as an almost circular landmass with a string of islands tapering away beneath. In the Pacific there are vignettes of mermaids, whales and a shipwreck. The verso text, being in English, makes fascinating reading and adds to the value of this dramatic map.
