A good early edition of a detailed nineteenth-century map of New Zealand, published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. The Society was founded by John, Earl Russell, and Henry Brougham, later Lord Chancellor of England in 1827. The Society's main purpose was to encourage universal literacy, by publishing books of good quality that would be affordable to the poor. Perhaps the grandest of their publications was their atlas, originally entitled "Maps Of The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge". It was first issued by Baldwin and Craddock, and then re-issued by other publishers, here Charles Knight. This interesting map shows the islands with their original Maori names and very little internal detail on South Island, somewhat more for North Island. However, small but interesting entries on South Island note the "high mountains said to be covered with perpetual snow" (the Southern Alps) and "supposed coal field" near what is now Christchurch. Engraved by J. & C. Walker.
