Map 4 of the Ptolemaic delineation of North Africa is arguably the most interesting as it extends southwards to include the source of the Nile rising in the Mountains of the Moon "Mons Lune" and shows the coastline of west and east Africa further south than any other sectional maps of the period. All the Red Sea is shown and the interior is mrked by chains of mountains, river courses and placenames and an image of the mythical Christian Emperor Prester John. Ptolemy's geography had first appeared in print in 1477 and this summarises European knowledge of the period immediately prior to the great discoveries, however this area remained unknown to Europe for centuries yet to come. Lorenz Fries edition of "Geographia ..." reflected that period when the classical cartography of the Ancients began to give way to modern perception of reality. A very attractive example.
