A rare and most unusual historical dial with movable volvelle arm identifying the various European Empires / Countries throughout modern history from the first to the eighteenth centuries. The dial has engraved on it the names Kings, Queens, the Popes and Rulers of each country or nation indicated on the movable pointer identifying .... Roman Empire, Turkish, Spanish, French, British, Danish, Swedish, Polish, Bohemian, Hungarian, Russian, Portuguese and Prussian Kingdoms. The title is held aloft by two cherubs while the two lower corners hold further description. Christoph Weigel was one of a family of Nuremberg based engravers and publishers whose founder was Christoph, partner to his brother Johann Christoph from whom the engraver of this plate, also Christoph, was a son. The family are better known for a handful of smaller format atlases of historical and contemporary cartography but this plate appears to have been issued in a composite atlas of the period - hence its survival.
