An attractive and detailed nineteenth-century plan of Orkney's main town that was published in parliamentary reports concerning the 1832 Act. Reform Act 1832 was an Act of Parliament that introduced wide-ranging changes to the electoral system of the United Kingdom. The act was designed to "take effectual Measures for correcting diverse Abuses that have long prevailed in the Choice of Members to serve in the Commons House of Parliament." The Reform Act's chief objective was the reduction of the number of nomination boroughs, thus accurate mapping of the new boroughs was required. The resultant maps and plans are detailed, concise, accurate and yet not unattractive. The plan shows the town, its harbour and outlying areas in large-scale.
