A good example of this rare and important chart - the first to detail Hawaii and the accompanying islands. This chart and inset show the Sandwich Islands and a detailed sketch of Karakakooa Bay. The islands were explored on two instances, in early 1778 when Atooi was charted and again between November 26th 1778 and March 1779 when the other islands were visited. The sketch of Karakakooa Bay shows not only details on land but also sounding depths and points of anchorage. This finely etched engraving appeared in the three volume account of Cook's third voyage, the first two volumes written by Cook himself and the third, in which this plate appeared, compiled by Captain James King, after Cook's murder, on the island, in 1779. With a reinforced left margin, not affecting printed detail, this issue is of the Irish "pirated" edition of the accounts with, in the lower right corner "J. Butler Sc." In top left "Plate XXI". In top right "Vol III Page I". Throughout the previous hundred years Irish printer/publishers ran a lucrative trade in re-issuing popular London published books and atlases - often hastily and carelessly done. this however is a fine and uncommon example.
