Henry Hondius' magnificent map is centred on the South Pole and shows the conjectured Antarctic continent along with outlines of South America, southern Africa and known Australia below the Tropic of Capricorn. The South Pole is surrounded by "Terra Australis Incognita" designated by lightly engraved surmised coastal outlines and an annotation beside a chain of islands, noted to have been explored by Hernandus Galego in 1576, reflects the still held belief in a great southern continent. The four corners of the map are decorated with scenes from life in the southern hemisphere. The title appears in a decorative cartouche with the signature of Joannis Jansson who republished the map with his own name although it had been engraved by Hondius. This example has no verso text so is impossible to date precisely, however revisions made to the plate in 1650 have not yet been made. This is an attractive example of the map, with mainly original colour, but has been backed for protection, suffered extensively at its lower corners with restoration and some deterioration of the image. Consequently offered at a fraction of good example's price!
