Hantoniae Comitatus Cum Bercheria : J. Jansson / G. Valk / P. Schenk.

Jan Jansson's attractive map is unusual for depicting the two counties of Hampshire and Berkshire together, orientated with north to the right. In 1644 Jansson had published eleven county maps in an appendix to the "Atlas" sequence of publications with maps mainly by Henricus Hondius, appearing as a British atlas from 1646 in the "Novus Atlas". Jansson's county maps are seen far less frequently than those of his rival Blaeu, but are similar in style with coats of arms and decorative title cartouches. Jansson, like Blaeu, used Speed maps when creating his own thus showing county hundreds but no roads. Jansson's copperplates subsequently came into the stock of Gerard Valk and Pieter Schenk, whose imprint appears at lower left. This example is in bright original colour but has suffered some paper staining and colour loss along the centrefold, however little detail is affected and the whole, with its rustic titlepiece is very decorative.
