A very good example of Willem and Joan Blaeu's beautiful atlas of the counties of England and Wales. Finely engraved title-page uncoloured but with paste-down title, and 60 double-folio maps and one single-folio, all in careful and bright hand-colour. In publisher's gilt tooled cream vellum, slightly worn at top and bottom of spine. Old manuscript ownership signature on title page. Overall fine condition. This German-text edition comprised volume four of the "Theatrum ..." series. Although the maps were based on those of John Speed their design and quality of engraving and presentation deserve the accolades that the Blaeu family's work has inspired - a reputation as the finest map makers of the Dutch Golden Age of Cartography. Besides the elegant engraving and scripting each map has its title piece and mileage scale decorated with vignettes of a rural nature, cherubs, costumed characters and so on while coastal counties are embellished with sailing ships and whales. Blaeu's atlases are further distinguished by the beautiful vellum binding, frequently gilt-tooled as here, and by the strong printing on fine quality paper ensuring their life over the past 370 years and sure to outlast any recent printed publication. This volume has maps of each of the English and Welsh counties, general maps of Britain and, an uncalled-for appendix with a map of each Scotland and Ireland. One of the finest atlases of the country ever produced.
