An interesting and scarce map showing south of the Tropic of Capricorn with the routes of Tasman and other seventeenth century Dutch navigators, Dampier and Halley and most particularly the recent reports of Mnsr de Lozier Bouvet. Bouvet had led a French expedition through the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean and there is inset detail, at lower right, of his discoveries and plotting of Terre de Circoncision, lying between the Cape of Good Hope and the South Pole. Besides annotated detail on the map, extracts of the voyage accounts are shown in the left column. The map is of particular interest as it shows what was, and what was not known at this time. Buache was amongst the school of French Theoretical Cartographers who, during the first half of the eighteenth century propounded a variety of geographic hypotheses for those unknown areas of the world - particularly in the north and south Pacific - this map leaves the southern part of the globe conspicuously devoid of anything but known detail. An attractive example.
