A circular south-polar projection showing New Holland joined with New Guinea, the southern parts of South America and Africa. As such the map combines relatively recent reports and sightings of ice such as that of Bouvet in 1738 with the hypothetical proposals of the French theorists and a summary of detail that appeared on earlier maps by Ortelius and Kaerius amongst others. Published in the January 1763 edition of the Gentleman's Magazine, the map demonstrates the confusion surrounding the southern seas and Australia prior to Cook's voyages just ten years later.
