A scarce and unusual thematic map of France, including Switzerland, part of NW Italy, Western germany and Belgium, depicting the catchment areas of the major river systems. The map extends its technical remit into the English Channel where a very early version of contouring indicates underwater depths. Philippe Buache, "Geographe Du Roi", was at the forefront of the school of theoretical cartography prevalent in France during the Eighteenth century, however this map, given the familiarity with the region shown lacks the fanciful nature of some of the maps of further flung parts of the globe.
