This finely engraved miniature is one of earliest maps of Westmoreland and Cumberland available to collectors now. Copied from Saxton's map of 1579 and engraved by the prolific and highly regarded Pieter Van den Keere around 1600-1605, the plate was first published in a commercial volume by Willem Blaeu in a Dutch edition of William Camden's "Britannia ..." The plates subsequently came to London and were reissued by William Humble from 1627 although composite maps such as this were replaced by maps of the individual counties and had their Latin titles re-engraved in vernacular English. A charming and very scarce map.
