A very good example of a magnificent chart by the leading Dutch hydrographers of the century. Extending from the Scilly Islands and Western Approaches to the Kent coast and Calais, this large-scale chart shows great detail of the English south coast, adjacent Brittany and Normandy with the Channel islands central. Printed on two sheets joined, the chart has a title in Dutch, French, English and Spanish, indicative of the chart-makers' international market at this time. The Van Keulen family had become established as the leading European chartmakers after the business, started about 1680 by Johannes had become official hydrographers to the Dutch East India Company. During the eighteenth century the business continued to receive the latest reports from mariners, traders and missions around the world, updating and controlling the circulation of charts, both in atlas format and as separate publications. Under the guidance of Gerard van Keulen charts were produced to a large format, as here, finely engraved on thick, good quality chart-paper.
