A dramatic, albeit imaginary and stylised, view of an English town from the earliest days of printing. The town view was published in 'The Nuremberg Chronicle', an encyclopaedic history and description of the ancient and biblical world and this map is the first representation of England in print. The 'Chronicle' was allied with woodcuts of major European cities, and is regarded as one of the greatest early printed books - being the largest and most lavishly illustrated pre-1500. The book appeared in just two editions and both date from 1493; the first edition had Latin text and the second, as here, had German text. In this image a strong woodcut view shows a riverside walled town with fortifications overlooking another walled city on the opposite bank. The map is set in a page of German text with the adjacent page present (our measurements are for the view only and not the pages of text) with the verso including woodcuts of David with his harp and Solomon. Marginal tears repaired and centrefold reinforced but a very acceptable example.
