A rare and important survey of the east African ports of Mozambique and Mokamba. As one of the major Indian Ocean ports the area was under control of the Portuguese from the earliest days of European exploration and expansion. By this time, however, Portuguese power was being replaced by British, or French, authorities and this chart was surveyed by Lieutenant Mudge under the command of the Admiralty hydrographer Captain William Owen in the ship H.M.S.Leven. The chart is made at the very large scale of almost one inch to the mile so the detail of Mozambique town is clearly plotted. the remaining coastlines are contrastingly devoid of detail except indications of swamp and scrubland. Printed on thin paper and reinforced at old folds and marginal weakness, but very acceptable.
