recent arrival
This curious etched map of the British Isles has been attributed to master engraver and etcher, Wenceslaus Hollar. In 1645, after ten years on English soil, Hollar fled England because of Royalist sympathies. The map itself displays a contemporary political commentary being surrounded by sixteen scenes of recent political events preceding the Civil War in England and pertaining to Stuart involvement in European affairs as a consequence of the support given to Frederick, son-in-law of James I. A larger view of armies massing outside Prague is also shown. These views and further vignettes around the map area are keyed, by letters, to corresponding rhyming couplets along the lower border. Richard Pennington, in the authoritative "... Catalogue Of The Etched Work Of Wenceslaus Hollar," entry 543, points to a second variant version, re-engraved with lettering and other features slightly repositioned. Actually a better engraving. This example appears to be that variant. As often found, this rare map has been trimmed very close to the engraved detail, is now laid on archival backing, and has lost a few letters from the text below.
