recent arrival
An attractive and detailed plan of the early-Victorian City as it developed along its major routes of communication. The southern part, south of the river, is barely developed, but the map extends north as far as Richmond Place and 'the road to Glocester over Lansdown', west to Marlborough Buildings and, in the east, to the 'new road to Warminster'. Extending along the London Road to Grosvenor Place, the map is also of interest showing the "Pleasure Baths" at Bathwick, now the subject of various conservation plans. Also evident, is the line of the Great Western Railway over-engraved on earlier detail on the printing plate. At bottom right is a fine and detailed engraving of the Pump Room showing its Greek inscription meaning "Greatest however [is] water" (from Pindar). There is a numbered key to the main buildings. At the base is the legend 'Published as the Act directs for Meyler's Bath Guide, sold at their Circulating Library, and by all the other Booksellers in Bath'. The map appeared in Meyler's' Original Bath Guide, enlarged and improved'; Meyler and Son were printers based in the Abbey Churchyard in Bath. Finely engraved by Gingell, the map, printed on thin paper and with old tear repaired, is backed with protective tissue.
