Fighting For The Dunghill: - or - Jack Tar Settling Buonaparte : J. Gillray / H.Bohn

A famous and fascinating cartographic curiosity describing British and French aspirations during the Napoleonic era. Jack Tar, a well fed sailor with a strong resemblance to King George III, stands atop the globe and delivers a bloody nose to the emaciated Buonaparte, thus emphasised as a Corsican and used here as a symbol of France. The struggle between Britain and France is thus portrayed as global. This is a re-issue by Henry Bohn of James Gillray's print from the original etched plate. Top margin trimmed close.
