recent arrival
A magnificent double hemisphere world map first published by Jean Baptiste Nolin c.1775 and re-issued here by Denis, who added his own imprint, in 1808. Basset is cited as the map's printer at Rue Jacques in Paris. The double hemisphere projection charts the voyages of Cook and Clerke, to whom command passed after Cook's death, up to 1779. The map is surrounded by a wealth of decorative detail including allegories of the four continents. The title cartouche sits above the hemispheres surrounded by instruments of science and astronomy, whilst an armillary sphere is depicted beneath the two hemispheres. At either side of the sheet are diagrams of the sun, moon, and Copernican and Ptolemaic systems, along with those of Tycho Brahe and Descartes. Although many areas of the world are correctly depicted, certain parts such as the Australian east coast and the Pacific northern coastlines remain hypothetical. This is a very decorative example of a fascinating map, one of the last decorated maps at a time when scientific cartography was encouraging a more rigid and disciplined delineation of the world's outlines. Protective margins added and backing to old folds but overall most acceptable.
